Ian Taronji is Of Counsel at Benach Collopy. Prior to joining the firm, Ian was in a solo asylum practice based out of northern Virgina, where he represented asylum-seekers primarily from Central American before the immigration courts in Virginia and Maryland, as well as before the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Before practicing asylum law, Ian was in a patent litigation practice before the US International Trade Commission.

The son of a refugee from Cuba, Ian’s interest in asylum law is personal. He has represented asylum seekers from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. He is a tireless advocate for his clients and has won asylum cases in immigration courts, before USCIS, and at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Ian received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. He has been practicing immigration law exclusively since 2016. Ian is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland, as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Fourth and Fifth Circuits.

Ian is an accomplished jazz guitarist and enjoys cooking Latin and Spanish food. Born in DC, he is a lifelong DC sports fan and a diehard Michigan Wolverines fanatic. Ian lives in northern Virginia with his wife, two young children and a dog.
